Chassis 408 is one of twenty "Evo 2" cars built by Abarth for their assault on the 1984 World Rally Championship. Paired with Henri Toivonen Lancia's rising star, Chassis 408 was put into use at the Fins home round for the 1000 Lakes Rally. Set in the surrounding area of Jyväskylä known for its jumps and yumps, Lancia would be up against tough competition from the new Peugeot 205 T16 with former World Champion Ari Vatanen onboard. Toivonen who was on loan from Rothmans who was competing in the European Championship had limited rally experience behind the wheel of the 037, in fact only two rallies worth. Despite setting multiple fastest stage times his efforts would only be good enough for 3rd overall, some two minutes down on his teammate Markku Alen.
This would mark the only time Chassis 408 was used in competition and it was subsequently sold to Volta ahead of the 1985 season. Here it would be rented out to various drivers throughout Europe, often scoring podium positions against more powerful four wheel drive cars.
Now restored back to Martini colours from the 1984 1000 Lakes the car can often be found competing in Europe with Girardo & Co. They have also found use of the car to collect Christmas tree's and presents over the festive period. Maybe not something Abarth had in mind when designing the car!
